Kamaka

Kamaka Hawaiian Koa Ukuleles

In 1879, the Portuguese master craftsman and instrument maker Manuel Nunes arrived in the Hawaiian Islands with Joao Fernandes and Augustine Dias, two other instrument makers. Together they invented and developed the ukulele. A few years later, young Samuel Kaialiilii Kamaka began his apprenticeship under Manuel Nunes (More on Ukulele History). In 1916 he instituted the Kamaka Ukulele and Guitar Works in Honolulu. Sons Sam and Fred joined the operation in 1941. In 1968 the firm incorporated in the name Kamaka Hawaii, Inc. The instruments are now sold under the name "Kamaka" Hawaii. Today Chris Kamaka and Fred Kamaka Jr. carry on the tradition. The history and progress of Kamaka ukuleles is marked by a never-ending process of design, redesign and experimentation in order to produce instruments with the many and varying tonal and playing characteristics required by professional and amateur musicians alike. Many of their craftsman come from the ranks of the physically handicapped who take great pride in their creations. Kamaka instruments are tuned to GCEA and are assembled under ideal atmospheric conditions of 70 degrees F. and 40-45% humidity. They are well made instruments with excellent tone, that improves with age. The Kamaka ukulele is recognized around the world for it's quality and beauty.
